Practical Strategies for the Care of Film and Glass Negatives

Aiming to provide collections care professionals from small and mid sized institutions with practical strategies for effectively managing and preserving film and glass negatives, this webinar will emphasize pragmatic advice, resourceful solutions, and cost-effective measures to ensure the longevity and integrity of these valuable collections.

Throughout the webinar, essential practices for the care of film and glass negatives will be explored, with a particular emphasis on recognizing when to seek the expertise of a conservator. The discussion will cover;

  • actionable steps that institutions can take internally to protect and preserve these materials
  • safe practices and cautioning against those that may cause damage
  • guidance will be provided on the use of protective enclosures and environmental controls to further safeguard collections.

This session will help participants be better equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to implement practical and effective care strategies within their respective institutions.

Presenters 

Luisa Casella is an independent conservator specializing in Photograph and Paper Conservation, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC). She earned her degree from the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar in Portugal in 1996. She subsequently worked as a paper conservator at various institutions as part of the team at Luis Pavão Limitada, the leading photograph conservation private company at the time in the country. In 2005 Luisa was awarded an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for the Advanced Residency Program in Photograph Conservation at George Eastman House/ Image Permanence Institute in Rochester, NY and served as the first recipient of the Research Scholarship in Photograph Conservation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, she worked as Photograph Conservator at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, followed by a tenure as a conservator of photographs and works on paper at West Lake Conservators from 2013 to 2023. Today, Luisa is actively involved in teaching, outreach, advocacy, disaster response, and condition reports as an independent conservator, while also holding leadership positions within the AIC as Chair of the Photographic Materials Group and Chair of Communications Committee (2023-25).
