Silver Secrets: Practical Preservation for Small and Mid-Sized Collections

Whether you’re working in a museum, historical society, archive, or other type of cultural institution,silver objects—including art, jewelry, coins, or decorative items—require specialized care to preserve their integrity and appearance over time. During this program attendees will:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the properties and vulnerabilities of silver as a material.
  • Learn safe cleaning techniques for a variety of silver objects, and understand when professional conservation is recommended.
  • Identify appropriate conservation-grade materials for displaying and storing silver, and learn where to source them.
  • Recognize common mistakes in silver care and how to avoid them.
  • Explore the nuances of caring for different forms of silver. 

Presenter

Ingrid Neuman

Ingrid A Neuman, Senior Conservator, Rhode Island School of Design in Providence

Ingrid A Neuman is the Senior Conservator at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where she has cared for the three-dimensional collections for 18 years.  Prior to RISD, Ingrid was employed as an Objects Conservator at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.  She holds an M.A. and a C.A.S from the Cooperstown Program of Historic and Artistic Works.  In addition, Ingrid teaches Collections Care and Preventive Conservation in the Museum Studies Graduate Program in the School of Professional Studies at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.  Ingrid is a Fellow of both the American Institute for Conservation and the International Institute for Conservation.
