Caring for Born-Digital Collections: Digital Collection Management
Building on C2C Care’s 2022 Introduction to Digital Collection Management webinar, this session will focus on putting digital collection management principles into practice for born-digital collections. Watching the 2022 program prior to this session is not necessary, but may be a helpful starting place.
Topics will include:
- the ways digital materials enter collections,
- safe transfer practices,
- approaches to organizing and describing files, and
- decisions about preservation, storage, and access.
The session will also address common questions involving removable and obsolete media, cloud storage, and more complex born-digital materials such as email, websites, and social media. The emphasis will be on practical, scalable approaches for small and mid-sized cultural heritage organizations.

Kaitlyn Pettengill, Conservation Center for Art & Historic Artifacts (CCAHA)
As CCAHA’s Digital Archives Specialist, Kaitlyn Pettengill conducts digital preservation assessments and advises collecting organizations on digitization planning and the development and implementation of digital preservation programs, strategies, and procedures. Before joining CCAHA in 2024, Kaitlyn worked as the Digital Projects Coordinator for the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel University and the Digital Services Archivist at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. She is a Certified Archivist through the Academy of Certified Archivists and a recognized Digital Archives Specialist through the Society of American Archivists. She serves as Vice Chair of the Delaware Valley Archivists Group and holds an MLIS from San José State University and an MA in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art.
